Chapter 1: The Train

My name is Daniel. I am fourteen years old. I live in a big city with my mother, my father, and my little sister Emma. My city is very big and busy with tall buildings and many cars and many people every day.

My grandparents live far away in a small village in the mountains. One summer, my parents decide that I can visit them alone. This is very important for me. This is my first big trip without my family. I am excited and nervous.

My mother is worried. "Are you sure, Daniel?" she asks at the train station. "The train is very long. Six hours. That is a long time for a boy."

"I am not a baby, Mum," I say. I try to sound brave. But my heart is beating fast. "Grandpa and Grandma will meet me at the station. I will be fine."

My father smiles and puts his hand on my shoulder. "We are proud of you, son. We are proud. Call us when you arrive so we know you are safe."

I have a big blue backpack on my back. It is full of clothes and books and things I need for the trip. I say goodbye to my family. My little sister Emma is crying. She holds my mother's hand. I feel happy and scared at the same time. I feel many things.

The train is big and white. It has many windows and many seats. The conductor helps me put my backpack on the train. I find a seat by the window so I can see everything. The train starts to move slowly. Then it moves faster. I look out the window. I see my city. The buildings are tall. The streets are busy with cars and people. Then the city is behind me.

I see green fields with grass. I see small rivers with water flowing. I see cows eating grass in the fields. My mother gives me a sandwich before I leave. It is very good. I eat it slowly and look out the window. I have a book, but I am too excited to read it. I just watch the world pass by.

After many hours, the land changes. The flat fields become hills. The hills become bigger and bigger. They become mountains! The mountains are tall and beautiful. They have dark green trees. They have white snow at the top. I look at them and think, "This is really happening. This is my ."

At seven o'clock in the evening, the train stops at a small station. This is my stop. My heart is beating very fast. I take my backpack. I get off the train. The air is cold. The air is fresh. It smells like trees and earth. It is very different from my city.

I look around at the small station. I see a few buildings and a few people. Then I see them! My grandparents! My grandmother is very happy. She runs to me as fast as she can. She hugs me very tight. She holds me for a long time.

"Daniel! Daniel! You are so tall now!" she says. "So tall!"

My grandfather is a tall man with grey hair. He is older but still strong. He smiles at me warmly. He takes my backpack from me.

"Welcome, Daniel," he says. "You must be tired after the long train. You must be hungry. Come. We go home. It is not far."

Their car is old. It is blue. We drive up a road with many curves. The road goes up and down. I look out the window. I see mountains all around us. I see a valley below us. The sun is going down. The sky is orange and pink. It is very beautiful. It is the most beautiful thing I see.

Chapter 2: The Village and a Friend

My grandparents' house is small. But it is very warm and cozy inside. The house is made of wood and stone. The roof is red. There is a garden behind the house. In the garden, there are vegetables and flowers and fruit trees. There are some chickens. There is an old dog named Bruno. He is brown and white. He is happy to see me. He jumps around me.

In the morning, I wake up. I hear birds singing outside. Many birds. The sun comes through the window. It is yellow and warm. I smell fresh bread from the kitchen. The bread smells wonderful.

I go downstairs to the kitchen. My grandmother is there. She is happy to see me.

"Good morning, Daniel! Good morning! Did you sleep well?" she asks.

"Yes, Grandma. I slept very well. The bed is comfortable and the air is fresh."

She gives me breakfast. There is fresh bread with butter. There is honey. There is cheese. There is fresh milk from the neighbor. There are red berries from the garden. Everything tastes very good. It is much better than food in the city. Much better.

"Today, Grandpa wants to show you the village," Grandma says. "You can see the houses and the shops. Tomorrow, you can go to the forest if you want. But be careful, Daniel. The mountains can be dangerous. Please be careful."

After breakfast, Grandpa and I walk in the village. The village is very quiet and peaceful. There are about fifty houses. Some are big and some are small. Everyone knows my grandfather. They say hello to him and smile. He is very popular.

"This is my grandson, Daniel," Grandpa says proudly. "He comes from the city alone! He is a brave boy!"

The people smile at me. They say I am brave. I feel happy and good.

In the afternoon, I meet a boy. His name is Marco. He is fourteen years old like me. He lives in a house next to my grandparents' house. He has brown hair. He has green eyes. He has a friendly smile.

"Hi! I am Marco," he says. "My grandmother tells me about you. Do you want to play football?"

"Yes! I want to play!" I say happily.

We play football in a field near the river. The field is big and green. Marco is very good. He is much better than me. But he is nice and patient. He teaches me tricks. After the game, we sit on the grass and talk.

"How long are you here?" Marco asks.

"Three weeks. Three weeks in the mountains."

"Three weeks! That is great! We can do many things. I know a secret lake in the mountains. Not many people know about it. The water is blue and clear. We can swim there. We can eat a picnic. Do you want to go?"

My heart jumps. A secret lake! A real ! This is so exciting!

"Yes! Yes! I want to go!" I say quickly. But then I remember my grandmother's words. "Is it safe? Is it dangerous?"

Marco laughs. "Don't worry, Daniel. I go there many times. I know the way. My grandfather tells me about it. We go in the morning and come back before dark. It is safe, I promise. I ask my father. You ask your grandparents. Okay?"

"Okay! Yes! Thank you, Marco!"

Chapter 3: Planning the

That evening, I ask my grandparents about the lake. I am nervous. I hope they say yes.

Grandpa thinks about it carefully. "I know this lake," he says slowly. "It is two hours of walking. But the path is difficult and steep. Are you sure you can do it, Daniel?"

"Yes, Grandpa! Marco knows the way. He goes there many times. We come back before dark. I promise!"

Grandma is not happy. "I don't know, Daniel. I worry about you. What if something happens?"

"Nothing will happen, Grandma. Marco and I are careful. We are very careful. Please! Please let me go!"

Grandpa looks at Grandma. He takes her hand. "Let him go," he says. "He is fourteen. He is old enough. He needs to be independent. Marco is a good boy. He knows the mountains."

Finally, Grandma agrees. But she gives me many rules.

"Take warm clothes, Daniel. The weather changes fast in the mountains. You never know. Take water. Take food. Lots of food. Don't swim alone. Stay on the path. Don't leave the path. Come back before six o'clock! Not seven. Six o'clock!"

"I promise, Grandma. I promise everything. I will come back at six."

That night, I can't sleep. I am too excited. I think about the secret lake. I think about Marco. I think about the . This is my first real without my parents.

Chapter 4: The Morning of

I wake up at six o'clock. The sun is rising over the mountains. The sky is pink and orange. It is beautiful. I get dressed quickly in warm clothes and go downstairs to the kitchen.

Grandma is there. She is making sandwiches for Marco and me.

"Cheese, ham, tomato," she says as she makes them. "Two apples. Some chocolate. A bottle of water. Don't forget to eat, Daniel. You need energy."

I put everything in my backpack carefully. I take a jacket. I take a hat. I take sun cream. Marco arrives at the door. He is happy. He has his backpack. He has a small map.

"Ready for the ?" he asks with a big smile.

"Ready!" I say.

We say goodbye to my grandparents. They wave to us. We start walking. The village is sleeping. Only the chickens are awake. The air is cool and fresh.

First, we walk through fields. The grass is wet from the dew. There are wild flowers everywhere. Yellow flowers. Purple flowers. White flowers. Marco tells me the names. I try to remember but I forget quickly.

Then we reach the forest. The forest is dark. It has tall pine trees. The trees are very tall. The path is narrow. We have to walk one after the other. It is very quiet. I hear only our feet. I hear only birds singing.

"Look!" Marco says suddenly. He points. "Look at this!"

There is a small mark on the ground. It is a footprint. An animal footprint.

"Is it a wolf?" I ask nervously.

Marco laughs. "No wolves here, Daniel. It is a deer. The deer comes here to drink water."

After one hour, we stop. We rest. We drink water. My legs are tired. But I feel great. The forest is beautiful. I see sun coming through the trees in yellow rays.

"How much longer?" I ask.

"One more hour. Maybe one and a half. But the next part is harder. We have to climb the mountain."

Marco is right. The path becomes steep. It becomes rocky. Sometimes I have to use my hands. I climb. My heart beats fast. I sweat. But I don't want to stop. I want to see the lake.

Chapter 5: The Secret Lake

After a long climb, we reach the top. I can't believe my eyes.

In front of us, there is a lake. The water is blue and clear. Like glass. Around the lake, there are big rocks. There are some trees. Behind the lake, the mountains are enormous. Very big. Very tall. There is no one here. Only Marco and me.

"Wow," I say quietly. "It is amazing. It is beautiful."

"I tell you!" Marco says. "Now we swim!"

We take off our shoes. We jump into the water. The water is cold! Very cold! But it is wonderful. We swim and laugh and shout. Our voices come back from the mountains. The echo is amazing.

After swimming, we sit on a warm rock. The sun is hot. We eat our sandwiches. They taste wonderful. They taste like the best food in the world. I look down. I see the whole valley. I see the village. I feel like I am on top of the world.

"My grandpa comes here when he is young," Marco says. "He tells me about it. Not many people know it."

"Thank you, Marco," I say. "I will never forget this day. Never."

We sit there for one hour. Then Marco looks at the sky. His happy face changes. He looks worried.

"Daniel, look. We must go. Now. We must go now. The sky!"

I look up. On the other side of the mountains, there are clouds. Big clouds. Dark clouds. They are coming. They are coming fast toward us.

"A storm?" I ask.

"Yes. A storm. In the mountains, storms come very fast. We must go. We must hurry."

Chapter 6: The Storm

We put on our clothes and shoes very quickly. We start walking down. Marco is in front. I am behind. We walk fast. Then we walk faster.

Then the wind comes. It is cold. It is strong. The sky becomes dark grey. It is not blue anymore.

Then the rain comes. First, it is only a few drops. But after one minute, the rain is heavy. Very heavy. We are wet. We are wet from our heads to our feet. The path is slippery and muddy. It is dangerous.

"Be careful!" Marco shouts. "Don't fall!"

Suddenly, there is a very loud noise. Thunder! It is very loud. Then there is lightning in the sky! It is bright. I am really scared. I have never been in a mountain storm before.

"Marco! What do we do?" I shout.

"We find shelter! Now! We can't stay here! Lightning is dangerous! Very dangerous!"

We look around. Between the trees, Marco sees something. There is a big rock. Under the rock, there is a small space. It is like a cave. A small cave. Marco points.

"There! Come!"

We run to the cave. We sit inside. It is small but dry. We are safe from the rain. We are safe from the lightning.

I am shaking. I am cold. Marco opens his backpack. He takes out a silver blanket.

"My father tells me always take this," Marco says.

We sit together. We put the blanket around us. Outside, the storm is very loud. Thunder and rain and wind. But inside, we are safe.

"I am sorry, Daniel," Marco says. "This is my fault."

"It is not your fault," I say. "And this is still the best of my life."

Marco looks at me and smiles. "Really?"

"Really. It is scary. But it is amazing."

We eat our chocolate. We wait. The storm becomes weaker. After forty minutes, the rain stops. The sun comes out! Everything is wet and shining. The forest smells wonderful.

"We go now," Marco says. "Your grandmother is worried!" He laughs.

We smile at each other. We are alive. We are safe. We are friends.

Chapter 7: Coming Home

The walk down is slow. The path is muddy. I almost fall many times. But Marco helps me.

I think about my mother, father, and Emma. I miss them. But I am proud of myself. I come alone. I make a friend. I have a real .

"You are braver than you think, Daniel," Marco says.

"I am scared," I say.

"Of course. Being brave is doing the right thing when you are scared."

I remember these words forever.

When we arrive, it is five o'clock. My grandfather looks worried. When he sees us, he is happy.

"There you are! Come inside! You are wet!"

My grandmother hugs me. She almost cries.

"Oh, Daniel! Thank God you are safe!"

I change my clothes. I sit by the fire with tea. Marco is here. We tell my grandparents everything.

"You are smart, Marco. You find shelter. Your father teaches you well," Grandpa says.

"And Daniel, you are brave. You don't panic. You are a young man," he says to me.

Grandma shakes her head. But she smiles. "No more adventures like this!"

But I know I want more.

Chapter 8: Goodbye

The rest of holiday is wonderful. Marco and I become best friends. We fish. We help in the garden. We play football.

Three weeks pass quickly. Soon it is time to go home. On my last morning, I pack slowly. I don't want to leave.

Grandma makes breakfast. She gives me jam and cookies for the train.

"Promise you come back next summer," she says.

"I promise, Grandma."

Marco comes to the station. He is sad.

Marco gives me a stone from the lake. It is grey and smooth.

"To remember," he says.

"Thank you, Marco."

"Write me letters."

"I will."

I hug my grandparents. My grandfather holds my face.

"You come as a boy, Daniel. You leave as a young man. We are proud of you."

I get on the train. I have tears. I sit by the window. The train moves. I see Marco. I see my grandparents. I wave.

I watch the mountains become smaller. Then I can't see them. But I have the stone in my pocket. I have memories. I have a feeling that I can do difficult things.

The train goes faster. The countryside passes. The city comes. This is my city. My home.

My family is waiting. My mother. My father. Emma.

Emma runs to me.

"Daniel! Did you have adventures?"

"Yes, Emma. The best."

My mother looks at me.

"You look older, Daniel. You look like a young man now."

"I feel older, Mum," I say. And I smile.

My father puts his arm around me. "Welcome home, son. Tell us everything."

And I tell them the story. The story of the secret lake. The story of Marco. The story of how I become a young man.

My family listens. Emma's eyes are bright. My mother holds my hand. My father is proud.

That night, I sleep with the stone under my pillow. It is real. It is proof of my .

Tomorrow, I will write to Marco. I will tell him I miss the mountains. I will tell him I come back next summer.

But tonight, I sleep with a smile. I have the memory of the lake. I have the feeling that my life is changing. I am not a boy anymore. I am a young man. And it all starts with one .
